What skills are essential for Pakistani HR Professionals in 2023?

The HR department plays multiple roles in organizational development and success. To perform these roles, they must be mastered in various skills. In the current era, HR roles are not restricted only to recruiting, onboarding, training, compensating, and retaining them, but HR is serving on a much more significant aspect now. To have a better understanding of the changing role and having mastered multiple skills, we have to search for the answers to the following questions:

  1. Why was the term HR fascinating after 1980?
  2. Was HR supposed to do all these activities before that they are doing now?
  3. Will the term “HR” remain forever?

So, in search of the questions, we identified that HR was not the HR from the day first. It had a couple of other names before that, but it became fascinating once humans started considering it as a resource, and they were given more value than before. The second question answers that, initially, the HR department has a narrow perspective. The HR department was likely restricted only to recruitment, training, appraising, compensation, and a few more functions. But now, they are a part of strategic decision-making and execution. Furthermore, they are now coaches, counselors, critical analysts, and engaged in many other roles. As the HR was not there from day one, will it remain the same for ages? The answer will be “NO”. Considering an HR department’s role and responsibilities, it will disappear soon, and a new aesthetic name will take over the charge.

So, for the new and aesthetic HR, aesthetic skills will be required for the current era. In today’s time, we ensure that the Pakistani HR specialist must master many HR skills to make cutting-edge HR compete internationally. HR expertise can be summed up into 4 major domains:

  1. Fundamental Skills of HR: It comprises the essential skills that all HR professionals must be well-versed in because, without knowing the core skills, further skills can never be enriched. These skills include recruitment & selection, training & development, compensation, appraisal, retaining, promoting, firing, well-being and career planning. Although new trends in HR encourage organizations to outsource some of the fundamental functions, recruitment through outsourcing may save most of the potential time of the organization. Similarly, training through outsourcing institutes. Basic administrative skills are equally crucial for the HR professional to successfully run internal departmental activities.
  2. Soft Skills: Communication is the key to convincing someone. This is a powerful weapon for HR professionals as HR’s most important characteristic is maintaining and encouraging interpersonal relationships with and within the employees. HR has to encounter many issues, especially in the gray areas, where harassment and discrimination are at the top. To deal with such problems, communication skills play a vital role in resolving them. Similarly, HR should know how to communicate the best available information to the employees and to seek professional or expert help from colleagues and solicitors. Some of the soft skills that HR workers may not be as good at are communication, negotiation, problem-solving, conflict resolution, change management, initiative, and teaching employees the company’s morals.
  3. Business Acumen: This is the latest era that Pakistan’s HR has entered into. Now, HR is not only dealing with the essential functions but has reserved a permanent seat in the strategic role of the business. HR is now a permanent part of strategic planning because, at the time of strategy making, it is the only individual who knows how to calculate the success or failure of the business strategy. This is because of first-hand knowledge of the organization’s human resources, whether sufficient manpower with the required skill set is available in the organization or not. Apart from strategy making, he is also a key pillar in executing the strategy. Business Acumen of the HR also includes the counseling, coaching, and mentoring of the human resources for the strategic plan purpose, and all these activities are performed by the HR professionals. Being agile also adds an extra edge to any HR expert “what situation requires what solution and how promptly any action is taken by the HR” is crucial in today’s time.
  4. HR Technologies: Pakistan’s HR is striving to that level, and this could be the ultimate level that can uplift HR performance in the Pakistani industry. Using different technologies in HR can help HR professionals export the performance of large amounts of data into the reports within a few minutes. Familiarity with HR technologies may help to tailor the analytical HR reporting that can save time and effort, and this energy could be utilized in some more meaningful HR engagement activities. HR experts can use analytical skills to convert meaningful data into figures to know the actual performance level of the employees. With the correct analytical skills, HR can improve employees’ efficiency and experiences and ensure how the organizations’ human resources contribute to the business’s success or failure.

To be a successful HR professional, one must learn all the skills essential to be a multitasker and an active pillar in the organizational success plan. There are many ways to master these skills; training, professional certifications, coaching/mentoring, national & international business magazines, and case studies would be key learning platforms that can uplift your proficiency in your targeted domain.
